The pump moves water gently between the swim zone and the regeneration zone, and that circulation is what makes the biological filtration work. It runs for most of the year. We check it is turning over as it should, clear of debris and set correctly for the season, and we replace worn parts before they fail rather than after.
An air compressor drives fine bubblers that keep the planted zone oxygenated. We check the compressor and the airline, and we replace the air stones. Air stones wear out, so they are renewed every year as a matter of course rather than left until the bubbles thin out.
A natural pool has far less equipment than a chlorine pool, but the compressor runs hard through the warmer months and then sits idle all winter. Two visits a year, one to bring the system back online and one to shut it down properly, is the difference between equipment that lasts and equipment that fails in July. It also protects the planting and the water quality that depend on it.
The submerged oak beam that divides the swim zone from the regeneration zone, the liner and the edges all take quiet wear over the years. We check these on every visit, so a loose fitting or a worn edge is caught while it is still a small job.
